The Universalist Convention of North Carolina, Inc. (UCONCI) was first organized in 1895 to promote the coordinated growth of Universalism in eastern North Carolina. At that time, some very energetic circuit riders were increasing the number of churches in the rural areas of our state and also in South Carolina and Virginia. Reorganization in 1905 led to a charter of incorporation, and even as the tide of enthusiasm for the Universalist denomination ebbed with the subsequent liberalization among other more populous denominations in the area, this organization has held its ground and abides today to assure mutual support (both financial and social) among the congregations it serves. We serve as an oasis of reasonable religion in this "Bible belt" area and when people who have been disillusioned from more fundamentalist origins find us, it is with relief--and they are usually able to gather hope for the future through an organized source of worship based in love instead of fear. Our congregations are inclusive and diverse in beliefs and forms of worship services, as well as in community support, with varied and numerous efforts to actively improve the conditions we find in our neighborhoods. We currently have ten member Unitarian, Universalist, and Unitarian Universalist churches and fellowships with another anticipating full membership this year. These extend from the Piedmont to the coast, with most of the groups in the Coastal Plain. We also maintain a summer campground called Shelter Neck in the countryside less than an hour's drive from the beaches of Topsail Island, and about 15 minutes from Interstate highway 40. This is the home of one of the very first Unitarian churches in North Carolina, the Shelter Neck Chapel, built and dedicated in 1902. We have a good time and enjoy getting together to have workshops, seminars, retreats, and summer youth camps with lots of recreation and conversation.

Thank You to All Who Came Out for an amazing workday at Shelter Neck! We celebrated SAM Moore’s birthday and his 30th Shelter Neck Anniversary. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM! We painted tables, planted 35 WRAL dwarf azaleas, worked on the chapel, hauled off trash, worked on the pantry and many more tasks. What a beautiful day.
Thanks to our volunteers this past Saturday for cleaning our beloved ❤️ camp. With April showers and volunteers we are making great progress. Our next formal workday will be Saturday, April 27, 11:00 am through 4:30 pm. We will focus on washing of panels, sinks, stainless steel carts and painting 5 tables, two benches and a coffee table. Our contractor has been making great progress on the Chapel. The camp has bought a storage container, and volunteers have been moving furniture into it. The time is ripe for YOU to volunteer. March 2019 has brought lots of work to our beloved Shelter Neck Camp: *A storage container for temporary storage of furnishings *Interiors of all the buildings cleaned thoroughly and now drying. *Work Permits "pulled" from Pender County *Water pump repaired *Temporary power pole installed. *Window repairs and steeple repairs started on the Chapel *remnants of a chimney in the Chapel ceiling taken out. *An architect, an engineer and a surveyor hired. Plaster repair in the chapel will start as soon as the cleaned plaster is completely dry. What a great start to spring with a true renewal! We will be posting and emailing notices of work parties soon. Stay tuned.
Join us Saturday, January 5, to finalize our clearing out of Shelter Neck buildings to prepare for cleaning of the facilities. This will kick-start the initial restoration process. The workday will run 10 am-5 pm. Announcing: the launch of the adopt a room initiative mid January. This will allow rooms to be adopted by churches and individuals. These can be done collaboratively as well. There will be plaques placed above the doors in each room recognizing the donors! Details to come. What has happened during December: Meetings with contractors, a meeting with the NC Historical Preservation, a meeting with the architect, a design meeting, completing and turning in needed paperwork for restoration, including permits.

Saturday, November 17, Workday Thank you to the Hamilton’s, Sam Moore, Feryl Masters, Gary Mann, Carl Potter and his local friends, Susan Wasilewski and to all of the behind the scenes volunteers for the wonderful work and planning Saturday! We vacuumed 95% of Williams Hall, tore out 90% of the tile in the kitchen and kitchen, continued tearing out lath in Dix House and planned with our contractor Gary Mann next steps! This Saturday is a day of rest for honoring family time for Thanksgiving! We are so very Thankful for our Shelter Neck UU Family! Thank you!!!
Thank you to all the folks who helped the in the continued tearing out phase of the walls, the floors and planning at Shelter Neck over the weekend! Friday, November 2nd: Jane Hunt from UUFR led a group from UUFR to work! Those include Jessica Sinha, Bill MacMillan, John McLain and Dianne Irwin! Feryl Masters and Shelly Duncan from UU Congregation of Greenville were on site UCONCI Board reps! Andy Wasilewski (UUFR and UUCK) met them and spent the afternoon and evening meeting with FEMA and attending the community FEMA meeting to learn more about the community needs and our own Shelter Neck options. Thank you to all! Saturday, November 3rd: Logan Hamilton from UU Congregation of Greensboro and Community Youth Group, Rev. Justin Osterman (UUFR), Sam Moore (UUFR), Debbie and William Robertson (Community UU), Andy Wasilewski (UUFR and UUCK), Susan Wasilewski (UUCK-UUFR) and our wonderful contractor, Gary Mann of Winnabow met to tear out walls and discuss reconstruction plans. Shelter Neck Recovery Work Days Greetings Shelter Neck UU Congregations, We need volunteers at Shelter Neck UU Camp for the next two Saturdays, November 3 and 10 to attempt to complete tearing out walls to prepare to sanitize and treat wood with a mold treatment. Thanks to all who volunteered this past Saturday for a busy day at Shelter Neck. Volunteers continued work on tearing out the walls at Dix House. We were particularly happy to welcome Allison, Ethan, and Logan, counselors from Shelter Neck UU Summer Youth Camp. They were on fall break this week and made some time to come to Shelter Neck. Additional thanks to senior at NCSU, Ian Scott, from UUF-Winston-Salem, From UUF-Raleigh, there were Rev. Justin Osterman, Sam Moore, David Harvey, Sheila Higgins, and Jane Hunt. From the Community Church of Chapel Hill-UU, we had Art Andrade and Rob Hamilton. Susan Wasilewski came from UUC-Kinston. The teamwork was AMAZING! Thank you to Robert Stolar (Outlaw's Bridge Universalist Church) for offering to share professional grade scaffolding to support the restoration process. Thank you to Sheila Higgins (UUFR) for volunteering to help collaborate with UCONCI board members to support grant writing that is critically needed. From Sam Moore of UUFR: What a day at Shelter Neck! We really laid affliction, or maybe I should say 2 flictions on the moldy mildewy wallboard on 1st floor of Dix House. I hated to see that old timey - looking beadboard plywood wainscoting get trashed and wall board and plaster, too -- but they were horribly moldy and mildewy and had to come out. You can see daylight through the outer walls of 1st floor Dix House now. The roadsides at Shelter Neck and other parts of Pender County are sad sights with people's possessions cast out like trash. Anyhow, we accomplished a lot in Dix House and fortunately were able to save some things. Y'all were right about the wicking effects of the wallboard ! Will there be other workdays besides October 6, 13, and 20 ? I will gladly volunteer !

Shelter Neck Recovery Work Days Saturdays October 6, 13 and 20 Dear Friends, we will be having 3 big work days at Shelter Neck in October to get the basic recovery work done, mitigating the damage from the flood to the structures.. Then we will access next steps for further recovery and then rebuilding. When you sign up, we will be contacting you directly about the work that will be done on the day that you are there and what you need to bring and be prepared for. Thank you very much to David Harvey from UUFR, Stefan Wasilewski, Andy Wasilewski, a local Burgaw woman named Cindy, and Jon our heat and air guy. They moved many of the items that were most at risk up to the third floor of Dix or on top bunks and stage in Williams.
